Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury (1563–1612), after John de Critz (Antwerp 1551/2 – London 1642), inscribed upper left in yellow: SERO SED SERIO [motto of the Cecil family; late but in earnest]. A three-quarter-length to left in black, with a white lace ruff, his right hand resting on a table, his left holding the tassell of a cord (to which is attached a ring) hanging round his neck; a bag of office, a bell, and some papers on the table, left.
Provenance
In Lady Louisa C. Cavendish 1860 catalogue; by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
