Summary
An upholstered 'Knole' sofa, one of a pair, by Eyres of Chesterfield, first half of the 20th century, in 17th century style and in imitation of the famous sofa at Knole Park, Kent, upholstered in red velvet embellished with gilt metal braid and fringe, with high fixed sides and a rectangular back.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
