Summary
A couch, or a daybed, part of a set of walnut and upholstered seat furniture, English, circa 1730 - 1740, also comprising a sofa [NT 1127854.1], and a stool [NT 1127854.3]. The raised, raked end with scroll-over top, the rectangular seat raised on eight cabriole legs, the corner legs plain, the central four with decorative beading and volutes to the knee, and an incised decorative 'V', all terminating in pad feet. The end, seat and seat rail upholstered in pale green silk, embroidered around sides, centre of back and up centre of mattress with silver thread, in a pattern of formal flowers with loose sprays between.
Provenance
This daybed is visible in a watercolour by David Cox of the 1830s in the Long Gallery. By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
