Summary
A coromandel lacquer screen, Chinese, late 17th century. Of twelve folds, with pierced shaped hinges and leather edging. The folds with incised decoration against a black lacquer ground. With figures in landscapes, wild beasts, dragons and clouds inside a border of sprigs and vases of flowers. The back decorated with three different scenes.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
