Summary
A George I burr walnut, walnut and oak open armchair, or 'dressing chair', circa 1720 - 1740, the banded cartouche-shaped solid back veneered in burr walnut, and with scroll-over crest, the open arms on curving supports on either side of a drop-in seat upholstered in later red felt, on turned front supports terminating in pad feet and outswept rear supports, united by a double 'H'-shaped turned stretcher.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
