Summary
A long stool, one of a set of four walnut long stools, or 'bankettes', English, circa 1690, all upholstered in probably earlier green velvet with remains of appliqué embroidery, and with moulded seat rails, three front legs of 'horsebone'-type, united by a pair of scrolling and pierced mid-stretchers, the rear supports, side and mid-stretchers turned.
Provenance
This set of long stools appears in the Long Gallery in a watercolour by David Cox c. 1839 - 1840. By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
