Summary
A kingwood, rosewood and cedar strong box, English, circa 1675, on a later low stand. One of three strong boxes at Hardwick Hall, with fall-front and hinged lid enclosing a well and a drawer, with probably original silk ribbon handles, and with gilt brass corner mounts and straps with fleur-de-lys terminals, and with brass carry handles. Raised on a later low walnut stand of one drawer and raised on four ball feet. The box containing a pair of keys, both with bows in the form of a 'D' cypher, possibly for 'Devonshire'.
Provenance
By descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959.
