Summary
A late 18th century ivory whalebone and polychrome miniature casket, probably from the district of Kholmogorsky, Arkhangelsk, Oblast in Northern Russia. The faceted top with a fall front enclosing small drawers engraved and faced with whalebone and ivory, the canted sides with small doors enclosing similar small drawers, the centre with a single drawer over two small drawers and one long drawer, panelled throughout and engraved with roundels and joined circles and enclosing various tablets with open foliate scrolls backed with polychrome and with further tablets variously carved with a stag being chased by a dog, an eagle attacking a horse, two running hounds and two lions.
