Summary

Print, Frances Barton, Mrs Abington (1737-1815) as Thalia (after Richard Cosway RA) by Francesco Bartolozzi (Florence 1727 – Lisbon 1815). Inscribed: Rd. Cosway R. A. Delint. / F. Bartolozzi Sculp. A full-length portrait of Mrs Abington as the comic Muse, standing in landscape, in classical dress with long billowing scarf and sandals, head directed and looking to right, where she is about to crown with laurel a bust of Shakespeare, on a pedestal against which is propped a lyre, a comic mask held up in her right hand, at her feet a tambourine; behind to right a tree, panpipes tied to a branch.

Provenance

Photograph believed to have been owned by, or given to, EllenTerry (1847-1928) or her daughter Edith Craig (1869-1947) and came to National Trust in 1939 when Edith Craig transferred to Smallhythe Place (including buildings, land and contents) to the Trust.
