Summary
Oil painting on millboard, Sir Winston Churchill's Horse 'Colonist II' in the Lead, British (English) School, 1949/51. A head-on view of his thorougbred grey stallion from sire, Rienzo and mare, Cybele, (b. 1946) winning the ? Lime Tree Stakes, with runner-up behind, in 1949 or one of 12 more successes (including Winston Churchill Stakes, Bentinck Stakes and Kensington Palace Stakes and £11,937 in prize money. Sold to stud 1951 for £7,350), the year he was first bought from France. Or at the Lowther Stakes at Newmarket on October 12 1950 when, as usual, Colonist led throughout. This time, though, he was headed by the filly Plume II, with the 14-year-old prodigy Lestor Piggott on board, 150 yards out. In the words of the Times’ racing correspondent: “This would have been the end of most races but Colonist would have none of it. He chased her again and with supreme courage thrust part of his head in front on the line.”
