By seizing the fortress in the Cologne Electorate, John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, made it possible for him to carry out his audacious decision to leave the Netherlands theatre of war and join the forces of the supreme commander of the Empire, Prince Eugene, and the marshall of the Empire, Louis William of Baden in South Germany. Famous battles in the war of the Spanish succession were fought there".
