Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Victoria Leiter, Lady Curzon (1870-1906) by Fransz Seraph von Lenbach (Schrobenhausen 1836 – Munich 1904), signed, 1901. An oval-framed half-length portrait, facing, coyly gazing at the spectator, her cheek leaning on her left hand, on which she which she wears a bracelet, dressed in a swirl of white chiffon or net. A sketch is in the Nationalgalerei, Berlin and another in the Stadtische Galerei, Lenbachhaus. Mary described how the artist visited, put her in the pose and had over 20 photographs taken of her by a photographer and then painted the sketches overnight.
Provenance
Commissioned by George Nathaniel Curzon, Marquess Curzon of Kedleston, Earl Curzon of Kedleston, 1st Viscount Scarsdale and 1st Baron Ravensdale (1859-1925) in 1901; gifted to the National Trust in 1986 by Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000).
