One of a pair of fine quality percussion sporting guns, c1840, by Samuel and Charles Smith, gunmakers, Princes Street, Leicester Square, London. (fl. 1834-69). Double side-by-side round iron barrels of fine Damascus twist construction, with upper joining rib. The breech end signed, SAML. and C. SMITH, PRINCES STREET, LEICESTER SQUARE, LONDON, together with the serial numbers 1 and 2. Bead fore-sight. Stamped on the underside with Serial Numbers 6330 and 6331 respectively, together with London Gunmakers Company proof marks, and the initials HS. The engraved breeches stamped with Serial Numbers 6330 and 6331 respectively and incorporating platinum safety vents. The barrel tang finely engraved and numbered. Secured to the stock by 1 barrel slide. 1 ramrod present - 1 ramrod missing. Barrel length 76.2cm Calibre 18mm. Figured walnut half stock with a chequered wrist. Finely engraved iron furniture comprising; butt-plate the tang engraved with Serial Numbers 6330 and 6331 respectively, trigger guard, fore-end cap and 2 ramrod pipes. Blank retangular escutcheon inset behind the barrel tang. Double curved iron triggers. Right and left hand percussion locks with foliate and bird engraving, signed SAML. and C. SMITH, PRINCES STREET, LONDON. The percussion hammers chiselled with a diamond or basket weave design. Overall length 118cm
