Summary
A pair of fine quality double-barrelled percussion sporting guns, c1840, by Samuel and Charles Smith, gunmakers, Princes Street, Leicester Square, London. (fl. 1834-69). Barrels; Double side-by-side round iron barrels of fine Damascus twist construction, with upper joining rib. The breech end signed, SAML. and C. SMITH, PRINCES STREET, LEICESTER SQUARE, LONDON, together with the serial numbers 1 and 2. Bead fore-sight. Stamped on the underside with Serial Numbers 6330 and 6331 respectively, together with London proof marks and the initials HS. The engraved breeches stamped with Serial Numbers 6330 and 6331 respectively and incorporating platinum safety vents. The barrel tang finely engraved and numbered. Secured to the stock by 1 barrel slide. 1 ramrod present - 1 ramrod missing. Length 76.2cm Calibre 18mm. Stock; Figured walnut half stock with chequered wrist. Finely engraved steel furniture comprising; butt-plate the tang engraved with Serial Numbers 6330 and 6331 respectively, trigger guard, fore-end cap and 2 ramrod pipes. Blank retangular escutcheon behind barrel tang. Double triggers. Locks; Right and left hand percussion locks with foliate and pheasant engraving, signed SAML. and C. SMITH, PRINCES STREET, LONDON. Hammers chiselled with a diamond/basket weave design. Overall length 118cm Condition (Code 4) Barrel - some rust patches; one ramrod missing; 1 barrel slide missing Stock - good Lock - good
