Full description
Fine quality iron barrelled flintlock musketoon, circa 1760, by Jonathan Stanton, London (fl. 1739-1766). Iron barrel of considerable length, formed in 3 stages, octagonal at the breech, becoming 16 sided, then round with a gradual flare to the muzzle. There is a gold lined touch-hole. The breech is stamped with London Gunmakers Company proof marks, the makers mark, IS under a fleur-de-lys, and signed, STANTON, LONDON. Large raised silver fore-sight; the engraved barrel tang formed with a sighting channel. Secured to the stock by 3 barrel slides. The ramrod missing. Barrel length 91.5cm Diameter at muzzle 36.5mm. Walnut full stock, the handrail form butt with a strong downward curve. The barrel tang apron carved with a shell design. Engraved iron furniture comprising; butt-plate, trigger guard with forward acanthus finial and small rear vase-form finial, side-plate (with retaining screw), and 3 ramrod pipes. Also a decorative silver escutcheon is engraved with collared bird. Scroll form iron trigger. Flintlock, the lockplate of flat form with a stepped and bevelled edges, signed STANTON. The frizzen spring with vase-form finial. Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails. Overall length 129.5cm
