Summary
Brass and steel, the Marble Hall western fireplace grate, made Birmingham, England, possibly by Thomas Blockley (c. 1705-89) after designs by George Richardson (c. 1738-1813), c. 1775-8. A basket grate designed by George Richardson for the western fireplace in the Marble Hall, Kedleston (original design NT 109150); made in Birmingham, possibly by Thomas Blockley. The steel basket bowl-shaped and fluted with brass string-of-pearl detail. The bowl flanked by brass winged rams, as corner elements, surmounted by brass urn finials. The feet of the two brass legs of the basket grate are rendered as rams’ feet. The brass fender pierced with enclosed anthemion band and Vitruvian scroll.
