Summary
One of a pair of silver hairpins, from Shanghai, China. At either end it has two bats etched and enamelled with a character, possibly of double happiness; two bats together also means double luck. 'Two pairs of Chinese silver and enamel hairpins - Shanghai' (Christie's entry).
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.

On the reverse of the hairpins are two characters.
