Summary
A lid for a Cantonese enamel box. It has a foliated shape with a raised central disc. The sides have been decorated with a yellow ground with swirling flower motif in green with blue and pink flowers; this imitates famille rose porcelain. The disc depicts a woman sitting at a balcony with western style curtains behind her. 'A nest of five Chinese Canton enamel boxes' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
