Summary
An address case of red velvet with gold embroidery, bullion and spangles, having a top border of blue and green velvet. Densely embroidered in gold metal thread, with central motif of royal crest of arms. The reverse is also densely embroidery in gold metal thread. With gold tinsel tassels. High quality. It was made to contain an address from the Talukdars of Oudh. The lining is made of green silk. 'An Indian gold-embroidered velvet case, for an address from the Talukdars of Oudh (with translation)' (Christie's entry).
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
