Summary
A bronze standing female figure from Bengal. She has red pigment around the eyes, which are typically large for Southern Indian sculpture and as decoration on her ears, lips hands and dress. Her arms are bent at the elbows, which are designed to carry lamps. 'A brass figure of a female lamp carrier - Bengal' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
