Summary
A nielloed silver box with inlaid floral and leaf pattern. The box was displayed in the Bombay gallery of the 1903 Exhibition of Indian Art Manufacturers in Delhi, which was organised by Lord Curzon. 'An iron powder-box inlaid with silver - Indian (Bombay School of Art)' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
Marks and inscriptions
There are three pieces inside, that help with the provenance of the object. The main piece of cards shows that this was on display in the Bombay gallery of the 1903 Exhibition of Indian Art Manufacturers in Delhi, the other two cards mention that the object was sold.
