Summary
A Chinese incense burner in the shape of an elephant. The lid is missing, it may have been either a howdah (a canopy seat that is placed on an elephant's back) or, a depiction of Puxian (Skt. Samantabhadra) a deity who represents the Buddhist ideals of Law and Compassion. 'A bronze incense burner formed as an elephant (howdah missing)' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
