Summary
A painted hardwood tea table, Tibetan, 18th / 19th century. It has three carved panels of bamboo borders containing a vine leaf pattern. The central panel also shows two Buddhist symbols of the knot and parasol as well as the lion figure (Kirttimukha), a protective creature often used for decoration. 'A carved painted and giltwood tea-table or stand with folding flaps - Tibetan' (Christie's entry).
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
