Summary
Scabbard for a Chinese sword from the Ching dynasty. This style was the standard for Manchu soldiers. The shape curves up slightly towards the end of the scabbard, it is covered in shagreen and there are four brass bands with openwork depicting dragons, these complement the pommel and guard on the sword. A string with brass buckle is attached to two decorative loops. 'A Nepalese verdi-gris scabbard and sword' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
