Summary
Scabbard for straight, single edged long sword from Eastern Tibet (Kham) (Ke tri or patang). The scabbard sides are of steel with brass inlay at the tip, the central panels are of leather and there is a decorative repoussé mount at the tip with four bosses, one silver, one of coral and two of turquoise. 'A Ceremonial Sword (Khamba) with handle mounted with brass and silver wire; black leather sheath with brass mounts set with turquoise and coral - Tibetan (Kham)' (Christie's entry)
Provenance
Purchased in 1986 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000). Gifted to the National Trust in 1987 by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
