Hidden in the quiet back streets of Chelsea, 5 (now 24) Cheyne Row was the home of Thomas and Jane Carlyle. Their literary circle included the philosopher John Stuart Mill and the novelists Charles Dickens, George Eliot and William Thackeray, all of whom paid visits to the Carlyles in their red-brick Queen Anne house. Built around 1708 as part of a row, the house is 3½ storeys with a sunken kitchen and office. The interior features wallpaper by William Morris.
The collection is mainly of Carlyle memorabilia, including photographs, paintings and furniture belonging to Thomas and Jane Carlyle who lived in the house from 1834 until their deaths. There is a substantial remnant of the working library of Thomas Carlyle (795 titles in total).
