Summary
A rare set of three boarded oak chests, dated 1571. Of pegged construction with rebate joints. All with an ornate carved oak surround inlaid in bog oak with the date 1571, and the initials WS and AS.
Provenance
Probably ordered by Walter Strickland (1516 - 1569) before his death as part of building and refurbishment works at Sizergh Castle in the late 1550s and 1560s. Thence by descent, and given by Henry Hornyold Strickland (1890 – 1975) with Sizergh Castle and its estates in 1950.
