Percussion military rifled carbine, similar to the French Model 1846 "System a Tige". The metal rusted and covered with black paint which obscures any identifying marks. The “Tige” or pillar breech system was invented by Thouvenin of France in 1846 in an attempt to improve the effectiveness of rifled barrels. French military arms were copied and used by the Russian army of the period and also produced in Liege for sale throughout Europe and its Colonies. Round iron barrel, rifled with 6 straight grooves, the percussion nipple off-set in top of the breech. Blade foresight and folding rear sight with 3 peep holes. Retained to the stock by 2 barrel bands with retaining springs, the rear band with a sling loop, the forward band also forming a nose cap. Steel ramrod with large cupped head. The metal rusted and covered with black paint. Barrel length 86.8cm. Calibre 20mm. Walnut three-quarter stock, the left side of the butt stamped with the number 10. Steel furniture comprising; buttplate, trigger guard and small sideplate. Lower butt with sling loop. The metal rusted and covered with black paint. Percussion back-action lock. The percussion hammer with off-set nose and straight comb. Retained to the stock by 2 screws. The metal rusted and covered with black paint. Overall length: 127.5 cm
