Summary
Pen and bistre wash on paper, The Intended Suspension Bridge at Arlington Court, Devon by William Dredge (fl.1840-1860). Perspective sketch for intended suspension bridge for Bruce Chichester Bt signed William Dredge Civil Engineer London March 26 1849. Mounted in gilt frame. “A sketch of the bridge Sir John Chichester planned to cross the lake he had created in the park. Dredge was an engineer who had previously designed two bridges for friends of the Chichesters in Ireland. The piers were indeed built as shown, but on Sir John’s death in 1851 the bridge, which would have had a main span of 200 feet, was unfinished and the project never completed.” (Taken from [Hugh Meller, with notes on the pictures by Alastair Laing], Arlington Court, Devon, 1996, p.16)
