Summary
A present of a collection of watercolours gave the idea for the Victorian Picture Gallery, which also displays a set of miniature prints. Many of the prints throughout the collection are the work of George Baxter (1805-1867) who was the inventor of oil colour printing, the tiny examples of his work in these rooms were made for the wrappers in which needles were sold. The carpet was embroidered by Mrs Carlisle. The four watercolours shown on the right depict (top row) a bridge near Castleford, Thoveld, Cumberland (bottom row) A Man with Dogs and a Hill with Fort by T H Cronack.
