Summary
The Carlton House desk in the Regency Games Room was made by F. J. Early, and is one of his finest pieces. The tables of which three are sections of one large table, are set out for chess, draughts, backgammon, cards and dominoes. On the shelves to the right of the fireplce are more chessmen and those to the left carry ninepins, cup and ball, a top and three boxes of dice. The pair of silver gilt bowls with lids on the mantelpiece are in Georgian style, but carry the 1953 Coronation hallmark. The prints on the walls are by George Baxter. In the passage alcoves are chrysanthemum like flowers, examples of whittling from Gatlinburg in the American Smokey Mountains. The different colours are formed from a variety of woods. Embroidered items include the carpet and passage runners worked in wool to an Axminster design and the striped chair seats and four game boards which are done in silk. The delicate bell pull is embroidered with tiny flowers.
