Summary
Incised marble slab in an oak frame depicting Margaret Roper (1505-1544), daughter of Sir Thomas More, by Mary Gillick (Nottingham 1881 – 1965). Signed and dated 1934.
Full description
Margaret was eldest the daughter of Thomas More (1478-1535) and features in the group portrait of the More family which was passed down the Roper family line and to the Winns of Nostell c.1729 (see NT: 960059). Margaret was a noted scholar, with her translation of a treatise by Erasmus thought to be only the third time an Englishwoman saw her work published. The artist, Mary Gillick, is best known for designing the head of Elizabeth II on coinage of the early 1950s.
