Summary
Grand pianoforte inscribed on the fascia John Broadwood & Sons / Makers to His Majesty & the Princesses / Great Pulteney Street, Golden Square / London. No 7678 is inked on the bass end of the wrest plank and on its treble end is inked A.D / 1818 (the year of manufacture). The case of oak veneered with mahogany, crossbanded with rosewood, and resting on four turned and part-ebonised legs. The keywell veneered with rosewood and decorated with buhlwork. The compass CC – c4. Fitted with the English grand action. Pedal lyre with two pedals, the left for due corde / una corda and the right for dampers (originally a bipartite pedal for divided bass/treble dampers). Fitted music desk to interior, lid prop-stick and detachable fallboard surviving.
Provenance
Purchased new from Broadwood by Charles Winn of Nostell on 2nd April 1819 for £99 & 15 shillings (with £2 & 10 shillings for a cover and £2 & 8 shillings for a transport crate - Broadwood records also note a Mr Biggs was paid a commission for this and a second 1819 purchase by Winn of a cabinet upright piano for the Winn's Appleby Hall residence). Delivered by wagon from London to Nostell. Remained in the Winn family ownership at Nostell until July 2007, when it was transferred with other Nostell chattels to the National Trust via Acceptance in Lieu.
