Summary
A mahogany folio stand, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, circa 1820. With two slatted adjustable supports, on spreading rectangular end-standards and bars, with reeded brass castors, the castors stamped 'B S & P PATENT' below a crown.
Full description
Almost certainly supplied to Charles Winn, Esq. (d.1874) for Nostell Priory, Yorkshire and attributed to Gillows of Lancaster because the stamp 'Gillows. Lancaster' is recorded on a larger version of this pattern of folio-stand at Temple Newsam House, Leeds (see C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, Leeds, 1998, vol. III, p.655 - 656, no. 820). Probably commissioned by Charles Winn (d. 1875), who refurbished several rooms following his marriage to Priscilla Strickland in 1819 in conjunction with the designer Thomas Ward of 67 Frith Street, Soho Square, London. Other commissions - from Gillow & Co. - were a suite of giltwood furniture [NT 960306.1 - 5], bookcases [NT 959720.1 - .5], and probably the dining room table [NT 959747] which also remain at Nostell Priory. Interestingly, an identical pair of folio stands survives at Sizergh Castle [NT 998180.1 & .2], another Strickland property. (Megan Wheeler, 2017)
