Summary
A mahogany hall stand, for hats, coats and sticks, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, circa 1820. Of two moulded convex rails, each fitted with three pegs, and between a pair of baluster-turned, ring-turned, reeded and gadrooned uprights each issuing five curved hooks, an ovoid iron stick guard below. Raised on an oval base with inset black-painted tin drip tray.
Full description
This was probably supplied to Charles Winn (d. 1875) by Gillows of Lancaster for Nostell Priory. An almost identical example was supplied to Thomas John Wynn (d. 1832), 2nd Baron Newborough, for Glynllifon, Caernarvonshire, Wales. The 'double hatstand' was invoiced to Lord Newborough by Gillows in June 1823 at a cost of £18.10.0.
Provenance
Date of acquisition not recorded, but photographed in the Top Hall circa 1870. Thence by descent, until purchased by the National Trust at auction in 2003.
