Summary
Internal telephone consisting of a wooden backplate designed to be wall-mounted, on which is fixed a wooden box containing the telephone workings, and underneath which is fixed a metal bell with hammer for attracting attention. Protruding from the side of the box is a brass hook onto which would hook an earpiece (not present) which would also be connected via a textile-covered cord. On the front of the box is mounted the circular black mouthpiece, above which is a small, rectangular, white plastic/bone label which would once have displayed a name, e.g. 'VALET'. 'Patent' is incised in the front of the box below the mouthpiece.
Provenance
Stamford collection; devised to the National Trust by Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford (1896-1976).
