Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Lady Katherine Wemyss-Charteris Douglas, Lady Grey of Groby (1801-1844), by Sir William Charles Ross (London 1794-London 1860). 1827. Rectangular. Three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, seated in profile to the right in a crimson armchair, wearing a blue dress with white lace collar and cuffs and a pink and green belt. She has grey eyes, fair hair in ringlets, and is aged about twenty five. Brown wall, sky and pink flowers in the background. Scratched on the reverse is, ' by Sir W. Ross / Lady Grey of Groby / Daughter of the Earl of Wemyss, Mother of Lady Margaret Milbank'. This is a pair with DUN/P/169, George Harry Grey, Lord Grey of Groby (1802-1835), also by Sir William Charles Ross, and was recorded in both 1960 and 1974 as being situated on the white marble table at the top of the Grand Staircase.
