Summary
Print, line engraving, Princess Mary Tudor, Queen of France and later Duchess of Suffolk (1495/6-1533 and Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk (1484-1545) by George Vertue (London 1684 - London 1756).Large unframed engraving. Half-length portraits of Mary and Suffolk holding hands, she holding an artichoke with the caduceus sticking in the top; within an imagined frame with a curtain with fleur-de-lis behind and allegorical symbols around the 'frame' within a stone 'frame' with frieze. At her coronation Queen Mary would have held a sceptre in one hand and an orb, or globe, in the other. It has been suggested that the globe artichoke with caduceus represents the orb, or globe, and the fact that on her marriage to Charles Brandon, Mary would have lost her trappings of ruling royalty. 'Her Royal Grace / THE QUEEN OF FRANCE / sister of K. HENRY VIII / Married to LEWIS XII ye FRENCH KING / afterwards / to the DUKE OF SUFFOLK' (on lion's body); 'Inscrib'd to the Rt. Honble. JOHN Lord CARTERET / Earl of GRANVILLE, from an original in his possession / by his most humble and most Obedient Servt. G. Vertue' (within impressed border); '?Picture by Mabuse / WG[or 9?]F' (handwritten in pencil bottom centre); 'G. Vertue Sculp. 1748' (bottom right of 'frame'); PL.III (top right corner).
