Summary
Wax, Harriet White, Mrs William Grey (1829-1880), by Richard Cockle Lucas (Salisbury 1800 – Chilworth 1883), 1856. A carved white wax relief portrait of a young woman in profile, facing right, against a brown wax background, in oval red velvet surround within heavy moulded wooden frame with leaf and scroll strips stuck into frame. Engraved on background 'Mrs Wm Grey modeled at Rownhams for Dame Jane Cobb 1856. R.C.Lucas'. The sitter is Harriet White, Mrs William Grey (1829-1880). She was the daughter of the Rev. Francis Henry White (1782-1864), Vicar of Blakesley, Northamptonshire and Elizabeth Master. She was the great niece of the famous naturalist, the Rev. Gilbert White (1720-1793), of Selbourne. She married the Rev. William Grey (1819-1872), of Dunham Massey (see NT 932379 and 932380). Their son, William Grey (1850-1910), became 9th Earl of Stamford.
