Summary
Terracotta relief roundel, Day by Bertel Thorvaldsen (Gronnegade 1770 – Copenhagen 1844). One of a pair to Night, of which the original models of 1815 are in the Thorwaldsen Museum, Copenhagen. There are a pair of marble reliefs in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, possibly executed by Luigi Bienaimé in Thorwaldsen's studio in 1825/6.
Provenance
Acland items as part of the house. Sir Thomas Dyke Acland and his wife Lydia travelled to Rome in the family yacht in 1835 and in "A Devon Family" by Anne Acland she mentions that the Aclands visited Thorvaldesen and that the roundels were brought back as keepsakes. Lydia played the piano and sang to Thorvaldesen
