Summary
Drawing, Sidney Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Lea (1810-1861) by George Richmond (1809-1896). Elected MP for South Wiltshire. Appointments included Secretary at War and Secretary of State for the Colonies. He was the son of George Augustus Herbert, 11th Earl of Pembroke and Catherine Woronzow. He married Elizabeth Ash à Court-Repington. When War Secretary during the Crimea War he was responsible for Florence Nightingale's expedition and was a close friend of hers.
