He was the son of Sir Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Granville and Lady Harriet Eliozabeth Cavendish. He married (i) Marie Louise Pelina von Dalberg and (ii) Castila Rosalind Campbell. He was MP for Morpeth and Lichfield and held appointments as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Lord President of the Council.
