Killerton House, Devon, 2000 [The National Trust] 2000, p.15. "THE DRAWING ROOM PICTURES Eleanor Cropper (d.1933), wife of the 14th Baronet, pastel painted by Florence Small (c.1860-1933) in 1902. In a letter to her brother-in-law in 1923, she described her thoughts on moving into Killerton: I reckon it will take us two years at least to settle in here before the walls of that sort of intagible home begin to rise. At present I feel I am rather sorting material than actually building. But it's [an] extraordinarily interestering job - making an old family home come alive again. The house has been the centre (for a period of about eithty years) 1809-92 of a very keen and full life; what came before that has left little record. The whole eighteenth century life here seems very vague....If Fancis [her husband] had had his way Killerton would have remained empty for his lifetime, and then [Richard, their son] would have had a nearly impossible job."
