Statue of Euterpe, the Muse of Music, Song and Lyric Poetry
Full description
Euterpe, is depicted as a full-length classical woman in drapery, the hem pinned up to expose the proper left leg and draped across the body to expose the shoulders. Euterpe is standing in contrapposto. The Muse of Muse of Music, Song and Lyric Poetry, is shown holding her attribute, the reed-instrument the Double-Aulos (or diaulos). She holds one piece in each hand with the mouthpieces resting against her lips. Her head is crowned with a wreath of sweet flowers.
Provenance
Commissioned by the National Trust and installed in Stowe Gardens in February 2020. This statue was recreated as part of the statue group Apollo and the Nine Muses. These statues were recreated as an artistic commission in the spirit of the lost original eighteenth century statue group.
