Statue of Erato, the Muse of Erotic Love/Poetry.
Full description
Erato is depicted as a full-length classical woman in drapery, the hem tied across the waist to expose the proper right leg. Erato is standing in contrapposto. The Muse of Erotic Love/Poetry is shown holding her attribute of a tambourine within her proper left hand; she taps the tambourine with her proper right hand. Her head is tilted slightly to the proper right and her face is shown with a sweet and lovely countenance. Her temples are adorned with myrtle and rose flowers.
Provenance
Commissioned by the National Trust and installed in Stowe Gardens in February 2020. This statue was recreated as part of the statue group Apollo and the Nine Muses. These statues were recreated as an artistic commission in the spirit of the lost original eighteenth century statue group.
