Summary
Longcase Regulator Clock - Shown at the Paris 1900 Exhibition. Elaborate Chippendale style case in mahogany with gilt brass mounts. Large longcase 8 day chiming clock in mahogany case by J Smith and Sons, Clerkenwell, c1900. 3 train 4 pillar movement with dead beat escapement and mercury compensated pendulum. Harrison’s maintaining power and rack striking with quarter chiming on 4 or 8 bells or 4 gongs and striking on one large gong. Brass break arch dial with lion mask spandrels and moon phase indication and lunar calendar in arch. Silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and Arabic 5 minute figures. Engraved dial centre with seconds, chime/silent, Whittington/Cambridge/4 bell chimes and calendar dials and with makers name plate signed “J. Smith and Sons. St John’s Square, Clerkenwell, London”. Elaborate mahogany case with many brass mounts and glazed door and sides. 3 brass cased weights. Break arch hood flanked by 4 caryatids and surmounted by 4 brass dragons and the bust of a female figure.
