Summary
A watercolour entitled 'Shenfield, Essex. Rev. C. Yorke's, and dated August 24th 1837, showing a rural scene with tiled house on the left with a windmill and trees in the centre and a pond and horse grazing in field on the right. Countryside stretching into the distance beyond and a road in foreground. Contained in a red and green sketch book belonging to the Hon. Juliana Pole Carew, later Lady Robartes, 1812-1881, containing watercolours of Hagley Hall, the home of the Lyttelton family, Lanhydrock and Cornish scenes. Signed and dated between 1837 - 1840.
Provenance
This sketch book was found in the house after the Hon. Gerald Agar-Robartes, later 7th Viscount Clifden, 1883-1966, gave Lanhydrock to the National Trust in 1953. The Hon. Juliana Pole-Carew, later Lady Robartes, 1812-1881, was the daughter of the Hon. Caroline Lyttelton from Hagley Hall, and the Hon. Reginald Pole-Carew, from Antony. The Reverend Charles Yorke was Rector of St. Mary's Church, Shenfield, Essex, and a distant relative of Julian Pole Carew.
