Summary
An unfinished pencil sketch entitled 'From the Drawing Room at Ryegate?' / Ld. Somers, with the date Aug 1837 crossed out, showing a view looking through an open window between two tall trees to hills with trees beyond. The beginning of a sketch of the garden is visible between the two trees. Contained in a red and green sketch book belonging to the Hon. Juliana Pole Carew, later Lady Robartes, 1812-1881, containing watercolours of Hagley Hall, the home of the Lyttelton family, Lanhydrock and Cornish scenes. Signed and dated between 1837 - 1840.
Provenance
This sketch book was found in the house after the Hon. Gerald Agar-Robartes, later 7th Viscount Clifden, 1883-1966, gave Lanhydrock to the National Trust in 1953. The Hon. Juliana Pole-Carew, later Lady Robartes, 1812-1881, was the daughter of the Hon. Caroline Lyttelton from Hagley Hall, and the Hon. Reginald Pole-Carew, from Antony.
