Summary
An unfinished pencil and watercolour sketch of Higgin's Moor, Cornwall, on the River Fowey, showing a river with trees either side and hills beyond. On the left is the pencilled outline of a man fishing, which is created on the page opposite in more detail. Dated 1839 and initialled JAR. Contained in a red and green sketch book belonging to the Hon. Juliana Pole Carew, later Lady Robartes, 1812-1881, containing watercolours of Hagley Hall, the home of the Lyttelton family, Lanhydrock and Cornish scenes. Signed and dated between 1837 - 1840.
Provenance
This sketch book was found in the house after the Hon. Gerald Agar-Robartes, later 7th Viscount Clifden, 1883-1966, gave Lanhydrock to the National Trust in 1953. The Hon. Juliana Pole-Carew, later Lady Robartes, 1812-1881, was the daughter of the Hon. Caroline Lyttelton from Hagley Hall, and the Hon. Reginald Pole-Carew, from Antony.
