Summary
Studio portrait, full length, of an old woman,possibly mother of Caroline Dickinson, daughter of Major General Carey and mother of Mary Dickinson, later Viscountess Clifden, 1853-1921, wearing a dark dress with small bustle and train, dark ruching down the front. On her head she wears a lace cap with dark bow and lappets. She stands facing to the left of the photograph, her right arm resting on a carved cupboard. A draped curtain and painted window are behind her with a striped seat below the window. Patterned carpet. c.1870.. See also 889242.11. Contained in a faded black leather bound album, embossed in diamond pattern with gold tooling and with brass clasp.
Provenance
A gift from the Hon. Gerald Agar Robartes, 7th Viscount Clifden, 1883-1966, who gave Lanhydrock to the National Trust in 1953 and continued to live there with his sisters, Everilda and Violet, until his death in 1966. The album is thought to have belonged to Mary Dickinson, later Viscountess Clifden, containing family photographs.
